Loading... Please wait...One of my favorite food authors is Michael Pollen. Michael is a New York Times journalist who set out to answer the simple question “ What should we eat?” The more he dug the more complicated it seemed… Then he dug deeper and the picture got simpler. “ EAT FOOD, NOT TOO MUCH, AND MOSTLY PLANTS”. Pollan has written two award winning books that I think are a must read. ‘The Omnivore’s Dilemma’ and‘ In Defense of Food.’
His latest book is called ‘Food Rules’. There are 64 of them and they are simple. Here are a few of my favourites.
EAT FOOD
#7 Avoid food products containing ingredients that a third grader cannot pronounce
#13 Eat only foods that will eventually rot.. (Twinkies or a Big Mac anyone?)
#14 Eat foods made from ingredients that you can picture in their raw state or growing in nature.
#19 If it came from a plant eat it, if it was made in a plant, don’t.
#12 Shop the peripheries of the supermarket… stay out of the middle.
MOSTLY PLANTS
#23 Treat meat as a flavoring or a special occasion (like a small side dish)
#25 Eat your colours.
#30 Eat well grown food from healthy soil…think organic
#31 Eat wild foods when you can
#36 Don’t eat breakfast cereals that change the color of the milk
NOT TOO MUCH
#44 Pay more eat less… buy quality.
#47 Eat when you are hungry not when you are bored
#57 Don’t get your fuel from the same place your car does
#63 Cook… or not but prepare your food yourself
